Keep it with the house papers. Insurers and future buyers both ask, sometimes years later.

No paperwork is worth following up

If gas work was done and no certificate was ever issued, there may be no record that the installation was tested at all.

Someone did gas work at my place and gave me no paperwork. Is that a problem?

It is worth taking seriously. It may mean the work was done by someone not licensed to do it, which is illegal in NSW and can void your home insurance. It also means there is no record that the installation was ever tested. We can inspect and test existing gas work and tell you plainly what condition it is in. If it is sound we will say so; if it is not, you will know before something goes wrong rather than after.

How do I check a gas fitter is licensed?

Ask for the licence number and search it on the NSW Fair Trading public register. It takes about a minute. Ours is 368473C. Gas work carries real consequences when it is done badly, so this is not an unreasonable thing to ask of anybody, and a tradesman who is annoyed by the question has answered it.

Can you connect a cooktop, oven or heater?

Yes, and by law it has to be a licensed gas fitter. We connect cooktops, ovens, heaters, bayonets and outdoor points, test the work, and issue the compliance certificate on completion. If the existing line will not carry what the appliance needs, we say so before installing rather than afterwards, because an undersized supply shows up as an appliance that never quite performs.

What about an old heater that has never been serviced?

Worth having looked at before you rely on it for a winter. Gas heaters need the combustion checked, the heat exchanger inspected and the room ventilation confirmed. A cracked heat exchanger can put carbon monoxide into the room, and carbon monoxide has no colour, no smell and no taste at all, so nothing warns you. Testing is quick and it is the only way to know.
